Spice Girls: Wanna, Wanna, Wannabe your lover.

Those of you who are baby boomers or senior citizens probably don't recognize the name Spice Girls". But, ask your pre-teen or teenage grandchildren and they all know who they are.

The Spice Girls are five vivacious British gals who have taken the world by storm since they were formed a couple years ago. They were originally together just to be an act. However, they blended so well they recorded an album that went platinum.

During their first full year in business and so far this year, these five spicy gals have earned $47 million, and have become a "Show Business Franchise". You might have seen them on the new Generation "X" Pepsi ads on TV or endorsing Faberge cologne.

To date, the gals have sold more than 14 million albums and 10 million singles. Their huge hit "Wannabe" had phenomenal worldwide sales. The most interesting fact about the Spice Girls is that while they have sold millions of records, they have yet to give a single concert.

The girls have been strategically developed into a "Brand Name". Through smart management, Spice Girls merchandise include watches, calendars, bomber jackets, stationery, cameras, key chains and even potato chips. And, more merchandise is being introduced each month. There are even Spice Girls cards similar to sports cards. As of a couple months ago, 25 million packs sold at $1 a pack.

Most celebrities charge a fee for having their name connected with a product. However, the Spice Girls' manager doesn't ask for an up-front fee, but signs a contracts that give the girls up to 50% of the profits from merchandise sales.

Next year, the Spice Girls are going to let their fans see them in person as they kick off their "Spice World" tour.

And, they will also make a movie. Another example of celebrities being more than entertainers - they are a business.
